About Rachel French
Rachel French, MA Ed. is an experienced international educator, having worked in schools in South America, Africa, Europe and Oceania. She is a certified Independent Consultant, Presenter and Trainer with Lynn Erickson and Lois Lanning. She is the Director of Professional Learning International (PLI) founded to support international schools to access leading professional development. Rachel French is also the sole provider of the annual ‘Dr. H Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois A. Lanning Certification Institute for Concept-based Curriculum and Instruction Trainers and Presenters.’
Rachel French, Dr Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning co-authored the second edition of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction for the Thinking Classroom, due to be published by Corwin, January, 2017. Rachel has presented numerous workshops in Europe and Asia, she has presented on Concept-based Learning at the AEM International Baccalaureate Conferences and the AGIS conference (Association of German International Schools). She works as a consultant supporting schools to plan and implement Concept-based Curriculum and Instruction. She also coaches and provides feedback to teams of teachers on curriculum development.
Rachel is currently employed as PYP Coordinator at Frankfurt International School, and is an IB trained PYP workshop leader. She is experienced in aligning Concept-Based Curriculum material and the IB programmes.
About Carla Marschall
Carla Marschall has vast experience in Pre-K to Grade 8 curriculum development and implementation, having held in various leadership positions at international schools in Switzerland, Germany and Hong Kong over the past ten years. She currently works in dual roles at United World College South East Asia in Singapore, co-leading the K-12 curriculum articulation project as well as facilitating curriculum implementation in the Early Years.
A certified Lynn Erickson Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction Consultant, Carla has led Concept-Based workshops with Lynn Erickson in Hong Kong and independently in China, Switzerland and Germany. An IB workshop leader, she has led specialized PYP workshops on the role of concepts in the teaching of science and trans-disciplinary units of study. Carla contributed ideas for lesson design to Lynn Erickson and Lois Lanning’s book published by Corwin (2014), Transitioning to Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction: How to Bring Content and Process Together.
Carla holds a Masters in Elementary Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a Masters in Applied Educational Leadership and Management from the Institute of Education, University of London.
Carla and Rachel are currently working on a book and accompanying video project entitled “Inside the Concept-Based Classroom”, collecting examples of best practice in Concept-Based Inquiry from around the globe.
