I AM Reading: Teach Children to Read with Meaning, Engagement and Joy

Frankfurt: 11th & 12th November 2017: 8.30am to 3.00pm Target Audience: Early years – Grade 2 Educators

This two-day workshop, presented by Kathy Collins, is designed specifically for educators who work in classrooms with children ranging from Early Years to 2nd grade. Kathy will share the latest ideas and research-based practices to support children to become the kinds of readers who make meaning in any text, who respond to books in a variety of ways, and who develop healthy reading identities. It’s vital to construct a joyful foundation in the early years upon which our young children build their reading lives, and this conference will provide practical ideas for doing so.

Each day will start with big idea presentations, supported by research and examples of classroom practices. The first day will begin with the question, “What are we teaching when we are teaching reading?” and the second day will begin with the question, “How do we support children to talk expansively and listen joyfully to each other’s ideas about books…or anything?”.

After the first hour of big-idea exploration on both days, Kathy will present several blocks of content which include topics such as:

  • Conferring with young readers: The importance of sitting beside children when they are reading anything and everything
  • Read aloud time: Use read aloud to support all children’s reading growth and development
  • Shared reading: Open doors for readers and welcome them into the wide world of reading for pleasure and meaning?
  • Practical matters: Ideas for dealing with scheduling, classroom environments, units, projects, and curricular intentions
  • And more

Throughout the two days, participants will realize just how much important thinking and sophisticated strategizing children do as readers before they are reading conventionally, and Kathy will suggest ways we can support and nudge forward their reading identities, their oral language, and their meaning-making capabilities during this vibrant time. Through videos and in-person demonstrations, Kathy will share examples of classroom practices that foster reading development, whether or not children are reading conventionally.

Once children are beginning to read conventionally, Kathy will show why it’s so important to continue to support them as meaning-makers by sharing some of the latest research-based ideas for how to help children think deeply, talk well, and respond in alternative ways to their texts.

Throughout the days, participants will have opportunities to try out some of the teaching strategies and methods. It will be helpful if participants bring along the following:

  • a text they’re reading for pleasure as an adult
  • a text they love to read aloud to students
  • a draft of their curricular calendar (or units of study or units of inquiry)
  • an actual photograph (not electronic) of a favourite part of their classroom.

Kathy’s intention is to plan days that will be informative, interactive, and enjoyable as they provide teachers with practical ideas that are immediately useful, as well as questions that will serve as fuel for long-term thinking about their classroom practices and environments.

Kathy Collins

Kathy Collins presents at workshops and works in schools all over the world to support teachers in developing high-quality, effective literacy instruction in the early childhood settings and elementary school grades. She is the co-author, along with Janine Bempechat of Not This But That: No More Mindless Homework (Heinemann, 2017). She also co-authored, with Matt Glover, I Am Reading: Nurture Meaning-Making and Joyful Engagement with Texts (Heinemann, 2015). Kathy’s other books include Reading for Real: Teach Children to Read With Power, Intention, and Joy in K-3 Classrooms (Stenhouse, 2008) and Growing Readers: Units of Study in Primary Classrooms (Stenhouse, 2004).

Kathy has worked closely with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University, and she was a first grade teacher in Brooklyn, New York. Kathy and her family live in Durham, New Hampshire.

  • 2-day workshop  – €600 per participant – Registration closes 4th November 2017.
  • Group Discount Rate (5+ participants) – €550 per participant

  • Late Registration Processing Fee applies from 2 September 2017 – €50 per participant.
